A 21-Coloring of the Plane Without Monochromatic Unit-Area Rectangles

Preprint4 pagesCombinatorics · math.COMath

A new four-page preprint with Gary Hu is now available on arXiv. We give a 21-coloring of the plane with no monochromatic unit-area rectangles, improving a known 25-color construction by replacing square cells with regular hexagons.

About the paper

The problem asks whether finite colorings of the plane must contain a monochromatic rectangle of a prescribed area. This preprint gives a 21-color construction with no monochromatic unit-area rectangle.
